BC shatters daily record with 274 COVID-19 cases reported in 24-hours

BC has once again set a new single-day record for daily COVID-19 cases.

On Wednesday, health officials announced 203 new cases, breaking the record of 165 set in September.

However, BC shattered that record on Thursday, announcing 274 new cases have been reported over the past 24-hours.

Those new cases came as a result of 10,398 administered tests for a test positive rate of 2.6%.

It's now the seventh consecutive day the province has reported more than 150 new cases of the disease.

Dr. Bonnie Henry also confirmed that there are now five cases linked to Kelowna’s Ecole de l’Anse-au-Sable School, the first school-related outbreak in BC.

Henry said 160 members of the school community are now at home self-isolating while health officials continue to investigate who may have been exposed.

“While it is obviously not what any of us want to see, it is not unexpected as we know that COVID-19 is still circulating in our communities and we know that is reflected in our school communities as well,” Henry said.

There have been a total of 213 exposure events and six clusters (where more than one person has been exposed) of BC's more than 2,000-plus schools.

According to Henry, most of the exposures occurred in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser health regions.

Health officials are warning that additional measures could be introduced if transmission continues, such as restrictions tied to weddings.

BC now has 1,920 active cases, with 71 people in hospital with the virus, 24 of whom are in critical or intensive care.

The death toll remains unchanged at 256.
