Superspreader event linked to adult hockey team from BC Interior

A beer league hockey team has been linked to a COVID-19 community outbreak in BC.

Dr. Bonnie Henry confirmed the news on Wednesday, however, she provided only a few details.

According to Henry, it was an adult, old-timers team and not a youth hockey league that went against public health orders and traveled to Alberta.

"We know that there are sports teams in BC, that have traveled to other provinces despite the restrictions that we've put in place," explained Henry.

"We know that, for example, there's a hockey team in the Interior that traveled to Alberta and has come back and now there are dozens of people who are infected and it has spread in the community. We need to stop right now to protect our communities and our families and our health care workers."

The news arrives the same day Henry announced a new public health order banning indoor adult team sports.

The ban includes basketball, cheerleading, combat sports, martial arts, floor hockey, floor ringette, ice hockey, ringette, netball, skating, soccer, squash and volleyball.

However, child and youth programs and sport are still permitted.
