Weather Statement Issued as Winter is on Its Way

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement as snow and Arctic air is expected to bring problems to the Okanagan Valley.

The first Arctic outbreak of the season will bring cold air, blowing snow, and difficult winter driving conditions to the southern interior beginning Monday. An intensifying upper trough of low pressure over the Pacific will develop into a powerful upper low near the Washington coastline by Tuesday morning. As the deepening trough approaches, light snow will spread over the Southern Interior Monday. The special weather statement covers the North, Central, and South Okanagan regions.

At the same time, Environment Canada says an Arctic high pressure system in Northern B.C. will intensify and push the air southwards. By early Tuesday morning, the coldest air of the season is set to arrive and temperatures will fall. Windchills are expected to worsen at this time and poor visibility will be a problem due to blowing snow.

Snowfalls of five to 15 centimetres are possible by late Monday. The Columbia regions will receive the most snow and further accumulations are expected everywhere on Tuesday. Snowfall warnings may be issued. The storm will end by Tuesday evening and the Southern Interior will settle into an extended period (four to six days) of chilly but otherwise weather-less winter days.

The overnight low on Tuesday is expected to reach minus nine, and the colder temperatures will remain for the rest of the week. Daytime highs will also be below freezing by Wednesday but sunshine is in the forecast.
