New Kelowna Art Exhibition Features the Original 'Selfie'

Many years ago, if a person wanted to take a “selfie,” they had to do so through a self-portrait.

A new art exhibition in Kelowna is displaying what the original “selfie” really looked like.

The Artist Herself: Self Portraits by Canadian Historical Women Artists features 40 self-portraits from female, Canadian artists. The exhibition is being put on by the Kelowna Art Gallery. None of the works have ever been shown in the city before.

Some of the earliest pieces are from the 18th century, such as a watercolour painting by Elizabeth Simcoe from 1792.

“There is great variety of materials in the exhibition, ranging from sculpture, drawings, photographs, and paintings,” said the Kelowna Art Gallery in a statement.

“The curators of the exhibition decided to be open-minded as to what constituted a self-portrait, so there is a wide variety of approaches evident to considering and exploring the self.”

Those wishing to view the exhibition can do so until April 3rd.
