Community Spotlight: Bringing Holiday Magic and Hope to Kelowna

This article is sponsored by ATB Wealth.

The latest episode of Community Spotlight, brought to you by ATB Wealth, delves into a truly inspiring collaboration. Host Rob welcomed Kelly Paley, Director of Community Engagement at The Bridge Youth and Family Services, along with Pam Turgeon and Shadia Doty, co-founders of Parade with a Purpose. Together, they shared stories of resilience, holiday cheer, and the profound impact of their initiatives on the Kelowna community.

Kelly provided an insightful overview of The Bridge, a social service agency with deep roots in the Okanagan since 1969. Known for their wide range of programs, The Bridge supports everything from prenatal wellness and postpartum care to addiction recovery services. "We take a lifespan approach to helping our community thrive," Kelly said, emphasizing their commitment to building resilience and fostering healing. This year, the organization's focus has shifted to enhancing their Youth Recovery House, with a goal of raising $250,000 to expand counselling, life skills, and even therapeutic agricultural programs.

Pam and Shadia shared the origins of Parade with a Purpose, which started humbly during the pandemic. "It all began with lawn furniture and four decorated trucks bringing joy to Kettle Valley," Pam explained. What started as a small neighbourhood effort quickly grew into a significant community event, raising funds for local charities like The Bridge. Now in its fifth year, the parade boasts 40 floats, live entertainment, and participation from numerous businesses and organizations.

This year’s parade takes a step forward, moving from its roots in Kettle Valley to downtown Kelowna. "We want the entire community to enjoy this magical event," Shadia shared. The parade route along Bernard Avenue, from Abbott to Bertram, promises a festive experience complete with marching bands, mascots, dance studios, and creative floats—all dedicated to spreading joy and raising awareness for youth struggling with addiction.

For Kelly, the parade is about more than fundraising. "This isn’t just about the money—it’s about bringing the community together," she said. With live streaming available for those unable to attend, and hot chocolate and glow sticks adding to the festive atmosphere, the event offers something for everyone.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, December 14th, at 6 PM, and join the Parade with a Purpose in downtown Kelowna. Whether you’re attending in person or online, it’s a chance to celebrate the holidays, support vulnerable youth, and experience the magic of community spirit. Let’s come together to spread joy and make a difference!
