UPDATE: Country legend John Prine has died from COVID-19

(UPDATE: April 7 @ 6:40 pm) - The music world has lost a legend to COVID-19.

The virus has claimed the life of country star John Prine at the age of 73, his family has confirmed to Rolling Stone.

He had been hospitalized in late March and was in critical condition, but his family said he was upgraded to "stable" after a day.

Unfortunately, he passed away in hospital today.

Widely considered one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, Prine was honoured at this year's Grammys with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

(UPDATE: March 31 @ 6 am): The wife of country legend John Prine has said her husband is now “stable” after being critically ill with COVID-19.

Fiona Prine also said she was infected with the virus but has since recovered.

“We are humbled by the outpouring of love for me and John and our precious family,” she said.

“He is [stable]. Please continue to send your amazing Love and prayers. Sing his songs. Stay home and wash hands. John loves you. I love you.”

She later added that, while Prine is now stable, “that is not the same as improving.”

“There is no cure for COVID-19,” she added.

“He needs our prayers and love – as do the thousands of others who are critically ill. Stay at home. Wash your hands. We love you.”

(Original story: March 30 @ 5:50 am): Country star John Prine is in critical condition after testing positive for coronavirus.

The 73-year-old singer-songwriter was sent to hospital on March 26, his family said.

“This is hard news for us to share,” they added.

“But so many of you have loved and supported John over the years, we wanted to let you know, and give you the chance to send on more of that love now.”

They added: “And know that we love you, and John loves you.”

It comes after fellow musicians Alan Merrill, 69, and Joe Diffie, 61, died after testing positive for COVID-19.
