Former NHL tough guy to be first Canadian castaway on Survivor

Tom Laidlaw spent a decade serving as an NHL enforcer in the ‘80s and his next big challenge won’t be any easier.

The 61-year-old has been named Canada’s first castaway on the long-running reality tv show Survivor.

According to his bio for the show, Laidlaw describes himself as disciplined, dedicated and stubborn.

Show host Jeff Probst called Laidlaw “the fittest guy out there” and “respectful of everyone” while still being “a guy’s guy.”

The Brampton, Ontario native credits his work ethic to Canadian hockey culture and that he plans to treat other castaways with kindness.

During his career with Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers, Laidlaw played 705 games, scoring 25 goals and 139 assists while racking up 717 penalty minutes.

This time around castaways will dodge weekly elimination challenges in Fiji's Mamanuca Islands in their bid to claim a $1-million prize and the title of Sole Survivor.

Season 39 of Survivor begins Wednesday, Sept. 25 with a 90-minute special on Global and CBS.
