Shakey Graves brings his sweet Americana sound to the KCT

A sold out Kelowna Community Theatre was treated to some Americana rock and roll on Thursday.

Shakey Graves, known to his mother as Alejandro Rose-Garcia, rolled through town for the first time in nearly three years.

After opening act Cameron Neal delivered an impressive set of his own, Shakey Graves took the stage around 9 p.m. and had the crowd in the palm of his hands all night.

He played his first four songs solo, using a guitar and a kick drum to captivate the audience as he started the show with a Townes Van Zandt cover before moving into his own work.

As if his sound wasn’t incredible enough already, his band joined him on stage and breathed another level of life into the show.

The Austin, Texas native certainly nailed his selection of bandmates, because the four musicians produced a sound that filled the hearts of the more than 800 people in attendance at the KCT.

Their chemistry on stage was clear as they made their way through some of Shakey Graves new songs from his 2018 album Can’t Wake Up and a few of his more popular older tunes.

They stayed on stage for almost the entire show, but left so the man everyone came to see could finish the night the same way he started, alone on stage.

He did so by playing a couple of his classics, "Dearly Departed" and "Roll The Bones," which brought the crowd to its feet and into the aisles.

Of course, he also came out for a highly demanded encore, as no one was ready to leave the theatre just yet.

Thursday night was Shakey Graves’ first show in Kelowna since he opened for City and Colour at Prospera Place in June 2016.

His Canadian tour continues in Nelson tonight and we certainly hope he finds his way back to Kelowna sooner rather than later, maybe headlining Prospera Place himself next time.
