An Okanagan college instructor is set to display her latest work at the Kelowna Art Gallery (KAG).
Amy Modahl has been teaching research writing, public speaking and theory courses in the Communications Department at Okanagan College since 2010.
This Thursday, the KAG is inviting members of the public to a talk and guided tour focused on Modal’s work Redactions.
The free event will give attendees a chance to engage with Modhal’s creative process and explore her work, which is described as bridging the worlds of visual and written language.
According to KAG, the work is a collection of paintings that explore the interplay between “semantic and asemantic expression” and encourage viewers to interpret the space between sense and nonsense, structure and abstraction.
“My work stems from an interest in how language can function visually as well as textually,” explains Modahl.
“With Redactions, I wanted to explore the boundaries of understanding and self-expression, and how meaning emerges — or dissolves — in that in-between space.”
The free event this Thursday will also feature a poem from Julia Prudhomme, which is included in Modahl's exhibition catalogue.
The special event runs from 6-7 pm and the art exhibit will run in KAG until Jan.12.
Outside of teaching, Modahl, who is based in Salmon Arm, is a multidisciplinary artist who has had work exhibited across Canada and the US.
