Rutland will light up its giant Christmas tree today

The Rutland community and beyond is invited to welcome in December and the holiday season today.

The giant tree in Rutland Centennial Park will be lit up this afternoon as part of the annual Rutland Winter Light Up.

Attendees can expect an artisan market, crafting stations, carolling, live entertainment, festive treats, an appearance from Kelowna Chiefs players and plenty more.

Santa Claus will be there as well to take free photos with the kids, but parents must reserve a spot online to ensure a spot with the big man in red.

The highlight of the event, of course, will be Mayor Tom Dyas lighting the 70-foot Christmas tree at 4:15 pm. The event as a whole runs from 2:30-5 pm.

“This event embodies Rutland’s vibrant and inclusive community spirit,” says Navjit Khun Khun, President of the Uptown Rutland Business Association. “It’s the perfect way for community members to connect and start the holiday season with joy.”

And while the event is meant to get everyone into the holiday spirit, it’s also a great way for residents to give back.

The Salvation Army will be on-site to hand out delicious bowls of chili and collect donations alongside the Central Okanagan Community Food Bank to help those in need.

“The holiday season is a time for giving, and supporting organizations like the Salvation Army and Central Okanagan Food Bank helps make the season brighter for those in need,” adds Khun Khun.

“Their work ensures that vulnerable individuals and families in our community feel cared for during this special time of year.”

The event is completely free for people to attend and you can find more information through this link.
