Save the Date: Mission Painters prepare for annual Art by the Lake show

The Mission Painters Art by the Lake group is gearing up for their annual show and sale, set to take place on July 6th and 7th at the Sarson's Activity Center. Margo Jensen, a long-time member of the group, provided insights into the event and its significance for both the artists and the local community.

"This is our 18th annual sale of the art the painters paint," Jensen said. "There are 30 seniors in our group, ranging in age from 55 to 93. It's such a wonderful group that members hate to leave, usually only doing so due to illness or passing."

The Mission Painters have built a strong community around their shared passion for art. The annual sale not only showcases their talent but also supports the group financially. "Our organization takes a 10 percent commission from the sales, which helps fund next year's show," Jensen explained. "The remaining proceeds go to the artists, as it's their work being sold."

This year, the group is focusing its fundraising efforts on maintaining the beloved Sarson's Activity Center. "We are thrilled that the city has decided to keep the building," Jensen said. "However, we need to raise funds to refurbish the interior. The city has already provided a new roof, but the rest of the improvements will be up to us and the other participants at the center."

The Sarson's Activity Center hosts a variety of activities for seniors, including card games and yoga, making it a vital community hub. "We are asking for donations to help with the refurbishment," Jensen noted. "It's a place that offers so much more than just art, and we want to ensure it continues to serve the community well."

The Art by the Lake show promises to be a diverse and vibrant event, featuring works in acrylic, oil, mixed media, and watercolour. "We have some absolutely fabulous painters," Jensen said. "There is a range of prices and sizes, so there's something for every home."

In addition to paintings, attendees can expect to find original cards and shrink-wrapped art pieces. "These are pieces that aren't framed but are still beautiful and affordable," Jensen added.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days. "There's parking available and we will have cold water on hand, which will be appreciated given the hot weather forecast," Jensen said.

Jensen emphasized the importance of community support for both the artists and the Sarson's Activity Center. "We hope to see many people come down to enjoy the art and support our efforts to improve the center," she said. "It's a wonderful opportunity to see the talent in our community and help maintain a space that benefits so many."

The Mission Painters Art by the Lake show is not just an art sale; it's a celebration of community, creativity, and continuity. "Please come down. We'd love to see you," Jensen concluded.
