YLW Social panel event connecting young professionals while raising funds for a good cause

There is so much value in forming connections with like-minded individuals, but for many, the word ‘networking’ has a bit of a negative connotation.

Stepping out of your comfort zone and into a room full of strangers can be a little, well… intimidating. Where do you start? What do you talk about? What if you don’t feel like you can relate with anyone there?

Two Okanagan locals recognized the need for a different type of event in Kelowna, and teamed up to create YLW Social.

YLW Social is a panel event geared towards young adults who are interested in making new connections in the community and learning from their peers.

“YLW Social is all about bringing your amazing community of young business professionals, business students, entrepreneurs and creatives together to connect,” said Emilia Muscardin and Megan Delowsky, co-founders of YLW Social, which currently takes place once per season.

Each event features local panelists from various industries who come together to discuss all things business, marketing and entrepreneurship.

“We have curated an amazing group of leaders in Kelowna who are growing their businesses and impacting the community,” said Muscardin. “Our panelists share their journeys in business, and talk about their biggest struggles and their greatest wins.”

A social takes place after the panel, offering guests the chance to mingle, sip wine and discuss their biggest takeaways from the panel.

“Our goal is to have everyone leave the event with valuable tips and tricks to up their business game, ignite their passions, achieve their goals and new business connections within our community,” said Muscardin. “We want our community of young professionals to create impactful relationships, collaborative connections and learn a thing or two. The greatest part about all of this, is that it’s already happening, after only two events! That is the most rewarding part.”

The two women both have different reasons for starting YLW Social, but the same end goal in mind. An entrepreneur herself, Delowsky had just moved back to Kelowna after spending five years in Vancouver and found a lack of networking events that catered to her demographic. With a passion for marketing, Muscardin was looking for an opportunity to give back to the community in a way that resonated with her.

The goal was to bring something fresh to Kelowna — a low-pressure environment where young people at all stages of their careers and lives can learn and connect.

“Our young professionals in Kelowna are incredibly talented and they are doing some insane things. Our mindset is also very different, we thrive off of community and collaboration over competition and this is the underlying message of YLW Social,” said Muscardin. “Let’s work together to create amazing projects and reach our goals as opposed to competing for business. Now more than ever, you see companies of different industries coming together to support one-another and collaborate. It’s the coolest thing to witness.”

The third YLW Social is coming up soon, and there are still some tickets left! The event will take place at the Innovation Centre from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on August 13, 2019 with an impressive lineup of local panelists. Tickets are $20, and because everything that it takes to put on the event is donated, all the proceeds from ticket sales go towards COBBS bursaries for local business students.

If you can’t make it to this month’s event, not to worry — there will be more opportunities!

“We have tons of ideas for the future of YLW Social. Think mentorship, mastermind sessions and keynote speakers. But we don’t want to give too much away, you will have to follow along on the journey with us!” said Muscardin. “However, you can count that whatever we do, our primary goal will always be to create a space and movement where we can collaborate versus compete with one another.”
