An investigation has been launched following the death of an inmate at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre.
Few details are available at this time, but it has been confirmed that the death occurred earlier this week on September 21st.
“I can confirm that there was an in-custody death at the maximum security Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre, sometime in the evening of Monday night,” said Dean Purdy, spokesperson for the BC Government Service Employee’s Union (BCGEU).
Kamloops RCMP, BC Corrections, and the Coroners Service are in the preliminary stages of the investigation.
“These types of incidents are unfortunate. Our condolences go out to the family,” added Purdy.
This was the third in-custody death to occur at the correctional centre within the past year.
The first was last November when 20-year-old Dylan Levi Judd was discovered deceased in his cell. A public inquest is slated to be held this fall to determine a cause of death.
Meanwhile Daryl Vic Belseck was identified as the inmate who died in his cell back in January of 2015.
