A Kamloops artist said he hopes his powerful new poem helps others as they transition from one chapter of life to another.
Timo Sargent studied political science and Spanish at Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador and graduated on Tuesday. Before walking across the stage and accepting his degree, Sargent said he felt a wave of uncertainty.
The 22-year-old musician decided to write a spoken word poem about life after graduating and filmed a video of himself reciting Chapters Change. The video had more than 21,000 views within one day of posting it online, and since then the video has hit more than 30,000 views.
“It’s not about first place, it’s about if the starter pistol went and instead of flinching or squinting, you started sprinting,” recited Sargent in the video.
Sargent said he wanted to release this video to encourage people to embrace the future and to be excited for the challenges ahead.
“It feels great," Sargent told KelownaNow on Thursday. "I really want to create art that affects people and connects with them.”
It doesn’t matter if the listener is graduating college or university though, Sargent said, what matters is that the person listening to Chapters Change is ready to take life by the horns.
Sargent made headlines earlier this year when he released a song in memory of his late best friend. Sargent and Ryan Pinneo grew up together in Kamloops, but Pinneo died at the end of January from a fentanyl overdose.
Even though the Kamloops artist doesn’t exactly know what his future holds, he said he’s happy he doesn’t have to write any more exams and is looking forward to continuing to create and produce music and spoken word pieces.
