'Protestors don't have the right to block small businesses': Kamloops MP speaks on current rail blockades

A Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo Member of Parliament is not happy with the approach protestors are taking in support of the hereditary chiefs of the Wet'suwet'en First Nation.

Cathy McLeod had a fulsome conversation with Canada's Minister of Natural Resources today. She spoke with Seamus O'Regan on the impacts the current rail blockades are having on small businesses and agriculture workers.

“First and foremost, we discussed the current rail blockades across Canada and the impact that this was having on our local economy," said McLeod. "From forestry to construction and the movement of our grain, protesters don’t have the right to block small businesses and farmers from getting their goods to market."

In addition to speaking about the protestors, McLeod also took the time to bring the forestry crisis back to the forefront.

"There are communities that are completely devastated. When a sawmill shuts down in a small resource town, the impacts are much more far-reaching than just those jobs alone."

"The 'supply chain' that supports the mill – the truckers and loggers, equipment suppliers, restaurants, retailers, gas stations and more -- also takes a hit as people aren’t able to pay their bills and/or must leave the area to find work elsewhere."

McLeod went on to say she hopes the government will handle these issues appropriately as soon as possible.

“I believe there are a number of targeted appropriate measures this Government should be implementing, and I look forward to seeing what is included in Budget 2020."
