École Dr. Knox Middle School will have room for a significantly larger student base starting in 2024.
The Government of BC has approved as much as $22.8 million for a two-storey, 12-classroom addition to the Glenmore school that will create 300 new seats for students.
School District 23 will contribute an additional $500,000 to the project to help the school, which serves students between grades seven and nine, with the much-needed expansion.
"We are pleased to see this investment in one of our key capital projects that will provide much-needed classroom space for our growing student population," said Moyra Baxter, chair of SD23’s Board of Education.
"As the fastest-growing region in the country, we look forward to continued support of our long-term facilities planning to make sure we have sustainable solutions to meet the needs of students and families in the Central Okanagan."
Construction is expected to start in early 2023 and students will be accommodated in on-site portables until work is complete in the fall of 2024.
The Province has approved more than $162 million to improve facilities for Central Okanagan schools over the past five years.
That includes more than $35 million for the new École H.S. Grenda Middle, more than $102 million for the new Westside Secondary school and funding for a site purchase for a future elementary school in the Wilden area.
