Kelowna’s IWEN Helping Mentally Challenged Girls in Nepal

Imagine living in a world in which any child who is born physically disabled, mentally challenged or with learning disabilities has little access to a normal life. They are hidden away, beaten or exploited and are regarded by society as a blemish on their family’s status. Boys with mental disabilities or physical challenges are more likely to be taken to medical facilities than females. As a result, many females are abandoned to an early death from avoidable causes.

Kelowna’s IWEN, a non profit organization that provides access to education for girls in Nepal, prides itself on recognizing what is needed in a community and creating a sustainable solution. After witnessing these horrific incidents in Nepal, the founders of IWEN knew they had an obligation to get involved.

Girls of the Sungava Program

The Sungava Program was created in hopes of providing a better life for mentally challenged girls as well as helping them live in a healthier, more accepting environment with their families. The program provides each female basic education according to their developmental abilities and teaches them skills which can improve their lives, such as creating crafts and simple garments. The program also adds daily exercise and basic health care to prevent secondary disabilities from emerging.

Girls and Mothers of the Sungava Group

Through the Sungava Program IWEN has fostered greater confidence within these mentally challenged girls and have been able to educate families and communities to appreciate and respect their disabled children. That is Stuff That Matters.
