High Fire Risk Closes Knox Mountain Drive to Motorists

The high fire risk in the Okanagan Valley has forced the closure of Knox Mountain Drive to motorists.

The road leading up Knox Mountain will be closed to vehicle traffic effective Wednesday, July 22nd. The upper portion of Knox Mountain Drive has been closed to motorists since June 22nd and will remain closed.

“The entire park will remain open to the public on foot or by bike, but we are limiting access by vehicle as a preventative safety measure,” said Blair Stewart, the City of Kelowna’s Urban Forestry Supervisor. “While our wildfire fuel mitigation program has been successful, we need residents to consider preventive measures as well, especially those living near natural areas.”

The Knox Mountain Drive road closure will remain in effect until City staff has assessed that it is safe to reopen the road. Residents are reminded that campfires and barbecues are not allowed in City or Regional District parks, with the exception of barbecues on beaches. Smoking is also prohibited in all natural areas.
