Kelowna RCMP Warn About Credit Card Skimmers at Fuel Pumps

Police in Kelowna want to raise awareness about credit and debit card skimmers after the devices have been seized from fuel pumps throughout the BC Interior.

Neighbouring jurisdiction such as Vernon and Kamloops have both seen skimming devices seized from gas stations. Skimming devices are generally installed into or over a card slot, and they read the credit or debit card number during a transaction. A small wireless camera is often installed near the PIN pad as well to record the customer’s PIN.

"Gently pull on parts of the machine, whether it's a gas pump or an ATM,” said Cst Ann Donnelly of the Kelowna RCMP Fraud Section. “If a skimming device is attached it will most likely move when manipulated, and therefore something is wrong. Do not use the machine and report it immediately to the business."

"Cover your hand when entering your PIN," adds Cst. Donnelly, "getting the data off the mag stripe of your card is only part of the puzzle. A camera will typically be installed to observe the user entering their PIN.”

Some of the skimmers are difficult to detect and look like a normal part of the card reader, so make sure to look carefully at the device and pay close attention to your bills.

Kelowna RCMP are giving the following tips to prevent their information from being stolen by skimmers:

  • look for irregularities in the decals on the pumps
  • look for signs of a wireless camera installed nearby
  • review your transactions regularly
  • report any suspicious transactions to your bank immediately
  • call the police if you observe any suspicious activity

Police in Kelowna are also warning both businesses and individuals to be extra aware about United States currency, since there have been recently reported cases of counterfeit US bills being passed in the community.
