Emergency responders will be saving even more lives than usual during the “Sirens for Life” blood drive.
Between September 1st and October 31st, a friendly competition will be ongoing between police, fire rescue, search and rescue, and ambulance services personnel across BC and the Yukon to see who can raise the greatest number of blood donations.
Civilians are also being encouraged to thank these first responders by giving towards their chosen group’s contribution count during the campaign period.
At a press conference in Kelowna, Mayor Colin Basran offered encouragement to those who may be hesitant to join in.
“Where I want to encourage people,” said Mayor Basran, “is those first-timers who have never donated before, because I was one of those last year, and I will admit I was nervous about giving for the first time; but I came to realize that one: it’s not painful; two: it doesn’t take very long, and three: it’s not as scary as I envisioned it being.”
“I would really encourage those first-timers to get out and try it.”
People can donate to Canadian Blood Services by registering for an appointment through the GiveBlood app or by visiting www.blood.ca.
