One local company is helping to pave the way for future generations.
Cookson Motors Ltd, owned by Hugo Cookson Jr., made a $50,000 donation to the Okanagan College Foundation’s Bright Horizons Building for Skills fundraising campaign.
The funding will support the construction of the new Trades Training Complex here in Kelowna.
In honour of Cookson’s father, who founded Cookson Motors more than 50 years ago, this local business owner said he’s happy to help future students grow within the trades.
“My dad did his apprenticeship in Kelowna, and had a strong belief in the apprenticeship process,” said Cookson. “As our company has grown there has always been a need for skilled apprentices. My dad recognized the importance of investing in the next generation and so this gift is meant to carry on that legacy.”
“On behalf of Okanagan College I want to express our appreciation to Cookson Motors, and to all the donors helping us build for the future,” added Okanagan College President Jim Hamilton. “It is particularly inspiring for our trades students to see this kind of support locally from organizations, family, and individuals who have played a role in growing the trades sector in our surrounding communities.”
Upgrades to the heavy duty shop at Okanagan College were completed in the summer of 2013, which marked the first phase of the institution's current $33 million renovation and expansion project.
Three new classrooms were added to the shop, along with a 1,8580-square-metre training space.
The Okanagan College Foundation is aiming to raise another $7 million for capital construction, and program and student support.
