The Ogopogo will remain as Kelowna's official mascot

The City of Kelowna has decided to keep the iconic Ogopogo as part of a parade float instead of refreshing the city’s image with a new theme.

The controversial decision was before city council on Monday as staff recommended that councillors refresh the city’s parade float with a new idea. The current parade float was built in 2011 and has been to more than 100 parades and travelled over 42,000 kilometres to more than 55 cities. Because it is well travelled, the float is beginning to show its age, prompting staff to recommend a new theme.

But staff said no to this idea and have directed staff to leave Ogie alone. He will continue to be the central figure in the next float, which is expected to be ready in the next 10 to 12 weeks.

The float will undergo a $20,000 refresh and it will be used in a number of upcoming community parades in the late summer and fall throughout B.C. and the Pacific Northwest.
