Students with disabilities in Kelowna will gain essential skills and education, thanks to a funding announcement.
Two programs at Okanagan College will receive $75,000 to support students who face barriers when it comes to education and training.
The Gateway to Trades program is one of the programs getting the money. The program helps at-risk students who are interested in career in trades. Starting in the fall of 2016, students within school district #23 at Central School can sign up for the program.
The second program that will receive a portion of the money will be the Pilot Mentorship program. This program will mentor students with disabilities who hope to have a career in administration or culinary arts.
Students from Kelowna, Vernon and Salmon Arm are eligible for the pilot mentorship program, which starts in the fall.
Jim Hamilton, Okanagan College president, said this funding will help Kelowna's next generation of workers.
"This investment will support much needed access for learners in our region who face challenges accessing post-secondary education. Providing opportunities such as our gateway program, which is an innovative partnership with School District 23, prepares students to succeed in further training in high-demand careers in the trades."
