Sandi and Dave Harder can see the Okanagan Rail Trail's potential, literally.
Their Klub Kalamalka campground sits alongside the abandoned rail corridor undergoing a facelift and they want to help with construction. They'll match donations from their customers up to $5,000 and are encouraging other businesses to do the same.
“The Okanagan Rail Trail will be such a gift to local residents and tourism operations. We all need to get behind this,” Sandi said.
The Harders have been running Klub Kalamalka for the past 50 years.
They were inspired by a matching donation campaign currently taking place thanks to an anonymous donor's generosity.
It was announced on June 28, that the anonymous benefactor would match all donations from July 1-10 up to $50,000. Because of the huge number of donations coming in, the donor has decided to up the ante and match donations up to $100,000.
There is a goal of raising $7.86 million for the rail trail. For every $160 donated, a metre of construction will be funded.
To date, there have been 492 individual donors and 1,612 metres funded. This means 51.5 per cent of the first phase of the fundraising campaign is complete.
