A fundraising event in Kelowna has sold out for two years in a row and that got us thinking… what does it take to run a successful fundraising event?
On The Lawn is a three-day fundraising event that sees people put on their brightest whites and lawn bowl on the greens. This year’s event sold out in one day.
Daylin Mantyka, the creator of On The Lawn, told KelownaNow how to run a sold-out fundraiser when it seems like every single person is raising money for a charity.
On the Lawn raises money for Elevation Outdoors, which is an organization that gets underprivileged youth taking part in outdoor sports programs.
People seem to be more up for a fundraising event if they know exactly where their money will be going.
Mantyka said she thinks On The Lawn has done so well in the Okanagan because of their social media approach. After last year’s event, On The Lawn posted every photograph taken on their Facebook page and tagged people in them.
"In today’s day and age you have to stay current. Social media is there. Our audience is on social media. Our event is very visual, fun and funny."
On The Lawn is something that has never been done before in the Okanagan. Mantyka said that’s why it ran so smoothly and sold out so fast this year.
"I think people loved the first event. It was fresh, hip and it catered to Kelowna's young professional community."
Think hard about what you’re trying to achieve with your event.
"In an era where there are so many different fundraisers and events that are supporting different charities, I think it's just really important to really take a close look at what you're actually offering, who you're offering it to and make sure there's some sort of unique twist on it," Mantyka said.
On The Lawn created a fun Youtube video about last year’s event. In the video, you can tell the participants were having a blast and thoroughly enjoying an evening of lawn bowling.
This year’s On The Lawn is sold out, but those who have tickets can expect another year of games and friendly competition.
The event takes place on July 28, Aug. 4 and Aug. 11, at the Kelowna Lawn Bowling Club.
