Rolling onto two beaches in Kelowna has never been easier, thanks to a couple of cool new wheelchairs.
Gyro Beach Park and Rotary Beach Park have become more accessible for persons in wheelchairs wanting to soak in the sun and maybe even touch the water.
“Our waterfront is a spectacular asset and we want to make sure everyone can access and enjoy the lake,” said Ian Wilson, park services manager.
Beach wheelchairs will be available at both beaches through Okanagan Beach Rentals. Persons having to use wheelchairs can sign out the specially designed wheelchairs at no charge.
“The Society already has two beach wheelchairs that are lent out regularly and they have proved to be a very popular item. Individuals who need adaptive equipment will be delighted to know the additional beach chairs will provide further accessibility to two beaches in Kelowna,” said Louise Abbott, executive director of the Kelowna and District Society for People in Motion.
The chairs are designed to navigate through sand better than a normal wheelchair.
There is one beach wheelchair at each location available on a first-come, first-served basis.
