Japanese sister city visits the city of sails

Officials from Chubu University, in Kasugai, Japan have spent the week in Kelowna fostering a closer "sibling relationship" between the two cities.

If you weren’t aware, Kasugai and Kelowna are “sister cities.”

The University of British Columbia hosted 18 people from Chubu University, including professors and some students. Joining them was a member of their chamber of commerce.

At the school, their faculty members showcased some of their research, especially related to agriculture.They were also given a tour of UBC Okanagan and some of its lab facilities.

“Our visitors were particularly interested in the innovative research happening at UBC Okanagan and we look forward to explore possible research partnerships with them in the future,” said vice principal of research Phil Barker.

No agreements were signed between the two universities, but there was some discussion on the potential to have research partnerships in the future.

The group representing Kasugai met with Mayor Colin Basran and city councillors on Tuesday.

During the trip, they also met with officials from the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce and visited local wineries, golf courses and museums.

"They love how we're just a great mix of beautiful mountains, pristine lakes and beaches and wineries,” said Basran, speaking of all the positive comments he heard.

Basran and Kelowna Chamber of Commerce president Tom Dyas visited the City of Kasugai in April, something Basran said was a great experience.

Even though Basran just spent a few hours with the group that visited Kelowna, he said he’s pleased with the visit.

"I'm happy to see that there are certainly ties being explored through education and I know that some of the delegates brought some business ideas to share with the chamber of commerce so hopefully there can be an economic connection made,” he explained. “Any of these ties certainly help bring our sister city relationship closer.”
