It may seem like a good idea, but RCMP officers are urging people not to jump off bridges.
The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue and the RCMP were called to the William R. Bennett Bridge on Saturday afternoon when someone jumped off the bridge.
The person swam to shore, but RCMP are pleading that people just don’t jump.
“Often jumpers can appear to be individuals who plan to harm themselves and can prompt countless calls to emergency services crews from the public concerned for their physical and mental well being,” explained Const. Jesse O’Donaghey.
“There is typically a high number of emergency resources required to safely and effectively rescue an individual injured as a result of a senseless and entirely preventable jump.”
O’Donaghey said because of several factors, like as unseen hazards in the water, individuals risk serious injury or even death when they choose to jump from dangerous heights.
