A teenager is in police custody after an overnight crime spree that allegedly saw him steal and crash a car, break into a house, steal a wallet and flee from police in another stolen truck.
According to Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna RCMP, the saga began just before 10:00 p.m. Aug. 28, when police tried to pull over a Mercedes that had recently been reported stolen.
O’Donaghey says the car didn’t stop, and crashed with a parked car on Lawrence Ave. a short time later. When police arrived at the scene they arrested two women, but failed to get their hands on one male who fled on foot.
Just after Midnight Aug. 29, police responded to a break-in on Elliott Ave., where one suspect allegedly filched the homeowner’s cell phone and wallet, and escaped in a stolen pickup truck.
O’Donaghey says police quickly realized it was the same person who fled the Lawrence Ave. crash.
“With the assistance of a cell phone tracking app, investigators tracked down the stolen Dodge pickup truck and the theft suspect to the area of Creekview Crescent in West Kelowna,” he says.
There, the 17-year-old West Kelowna youth was arrested without further incident.
“The youth suspect was found still in possession of the property allegedly stolen during the break and enter on Elliott Ave.,” he adds.
The teen remains in police custody, and faces potential charges including theft, theft of auto, break and enter, possession of stolen property, flight from police, and a parole breach.
