Okanagan College hosting free powwow in Kelowna

Everyone in the community is invited to Okanagan College’s eighth annual Youth Exhibition Powwow at their Kelowna campus.

Richard Jackson Jr., from the Lower Nicola Indian Band, will emcee the event, bringing together Aboriginal students and community members from across the region.

Jackson has been directing Powwows for more than 40 years. As an alcohol and drug counselor with the Conayt Friendship Society in Merritt he travels the Powwow circuit encouraging youth to remember and honour their traditions.

The Cliffs and Iron Mountain will both be drumming at the event and dancers will perform traditional, fancy, grass, chicken and jingle dances.

Crafters and vendors will also be on site.

The general public is invited to attend the free event which kicks off at 10:15 a.m. and goes until 2 p.m.
