Kelowna audience thrilled by Rocky Horror

The spooky spirit of October was alive and well at Kelowna Actors Studio on Wednesday for the opening night of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The risque show, with a cult following, did not disappoint and was every bit as creepy, sexy and fun as the movie.

In case you're not familiar with it, The Rocky Horror Picture Show tells the story of an innocent couple who stumbles into the castle home of a transvestite after their car breaks down in a storm. The unexpected evening is full of science, sexual escapades and aliens, so be prepared to think outside the box.

Studio co-owner Nathan Flavel took the stage in the iconic role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the self described, “sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania.” His hilarious rendition of Frank was made all the better with his epic costumes that literally made jaws drop (thigh-high red boots anyone?). His timing was perfect, everything was rightfully packed with innuendos and I don’t think there could’ve been a better person to fill the role, or the glittery corsets.

Mac Mackay made a great Brad Majors, one part nerd, one part nervous and one part naive. He also showed off his set of pipes numerous times.

Lyndsey Wong as Columbia also displayed her incredible singing voice. Her character added drama, despair and a whole bunch of sequins. Her costumes were some of the best in the whole production, in fact. Try not to laugh when she gets high on some type of laughing gas, guaranteed it’s impossible. People beside us were full on howling.

Making the show all the better, were the props kits, sold to the audience for only $15. With proceeds going to charity, I definitely wouldn’t pass on this. You’ll get the opportunity to throw stuff at the actors during the show, and it’s just that much more fun when you participate.

The audience seemed to be quite enthused with the performance, with many people shouting throughout the play (which is 100 per cent encouraged) and even getting up to do the Time Warp. If that’s up your alley, you can follow along with the amazing ensemble, whose dance moves and creepy costumes are pretty spectacular.

The set of the castle played well into the eerie vibe, while not taking away any of the attention from the actors.

Whoever did the costuming, bravo, and I want your job.

Needless to say, if you are a Rocky Horror lover, run, don’t walk, to the show at the Actors Studio.

Lucky for you, the show will run up until Oct. 31. You are encouraged to dress up, with a costume contest being held on Halloween. For those who like it extra saucy, special r-rated performances are being held on Oct. 21, 22, 28, 29, 30 and 31 at 11 p.m.
