Opening this Friday, Drawing from Life features newly commissioned works by eight local artists. The resulting works are rich, massive in scale, and truly fill the Gallery space. Two of the works are 12 feet high and another one is 22 feet long.
“While drawing is an ancient medium, it is so often treated as a second-class citizen in the art world, even more so recently with the advent of new media and the saturation of contemporary life with digital images, which are obtained instantaneously,” states Drawing from Life’s webpage.
“Drawing, by contrast, is a time-based art, a slow medium (for the most part) and the exhibition’s catalogue will have photographs of the artists at work on their pieces to emphasize this aspect: they have been created over a length of time.”
The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated, 56-page catalogue that includes an essay by curator, Liz Wylie, along with full-page photographic portraits of the artists working on site during the installation of the exhibition.
An opening reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held on Friday, December 9, 2016, from 6 to 9 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery. This is a free event, open to Gallery members and guests, by invitation.
