Local writers invited to enter short story contest

The deadline is quickly approaching for local writers to submit their work into the Okanagan Short Story contest.

The deadline for submissions is December 30th and this year there’s a one-week writing residency and a chance to get published up for grabs.

Stories can be of any nature, as long as they’re original fiction that falls between 1,000 and 4,000 words.

</who>Bust out those typewriters, you've got 3 weeks left to write and submit your best short story!

“We’re looking for the Okanagan Valley’s best stories,” said UBCO associate professor, Michael V Smith. “A regional contest like this is so exciting because we get to hear what our writers think, what they notice, what they’re dreaming about.”

Along with $500 in prize money, the grand prize winning author will have their story published in Vancouver-based subTerrain magazine and will earn a one-week residency at the Woodhaven Eco Culture Centre. There’s also cash prizes for second and third place.

Entries will be judged by UBC’s creative writing faculty and Renee Sarojini Saklikar, who is UBC Okanagan’s 2017 Writer-in-Residence, and the winners will be announced at a public reading in the new year.

There’s a $15 entry fee and entries must be either postmarked before December 30th or dropped off in person at the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies building before December 23rd.

The contest is now in it’s 19th year and you can find more information at okstorycontest.org.
