Kelowna Art Gallery digitizes its entire 881 piece collection

In celebration of their 40th year, the Kelowna Art Gallery has digitized their entire collection.

That means that 881 works of art from 166 different artists are available for you to view online.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to open the doors of our collection through this new online database,” said executive director, Nataley Nagy. “The permanent collection is one of the cornerstones of the institution and all of those works of art are held in trust by the City of Kelowna for its citizens.”

It’s impossible to fit all of the nearly 900 pieces owned by the gallery in one building at the same time, but that’s not the case on the world wide web.

The collection covers a wide range of pieces, from acrylic paintings to a hand-woven wicker sculpture to a vintage hockey helmet with honeycomb attached.

The majority of the pieces in the collection are by contemporary Canadian artists and there’s even a small number of historical pieces from our nation’s history.

Most of the collection has been donated to the gallery, but there are a few pieces that have been purchased over the years with lots of help from community donations and grants.

An upcoming exhibit will share a handful of these pieces in person as well.

The Big Picture will run from April 29th until June 25th, 2017, sharing a selection of some of the gallery’s biggest works with visitors.
