The snow is slowly melting and before long green grass will start appearing around Kelowna.
While grass is a welcome feature in city parks, it may be time to start thinking about what your home's land could be used for instead.
Grass lawns use much of the cities fresh water, can be expensive to maintain and offer little in return.
Cue Curtis Stone, aka The Urban Farmer.
Stone is in many ways Kelowna's produce guru.
His vision of transforming front and back yards from unproductive grass to a food source is providing urbanites the opportunity to grow fresh produce in the middle of the city.
The main goal is to be part of a food system that is more localized so people buy food that's closer to where they live. There are multiple benefits to buying localized food, which is fresh and carries more nutrition than traveled food.
The winter months don't slow him down either. The compact and efficient greenhouses in his own backyard produce fresh vegetables all winter long.
Stone also runs a popular YouTube channel that offers educational videos on urban farming, the business of farming and energy efficiency tips.
