YMCA offering free health assessments for seniors

The YMCA of Okanagan is hosting a free seniors health assessment on Friday, February 17th from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at their facility on Hartman Road.

Attendees will receive a one-on-one health assessment that lasts about 45 minutes and helps gauge cardiovascular endurance, blood glucose levels, blood pressure, strength and more.

“The goal is to equip older adults in our community with the tools and resources to remain independent longer,” said Kelley Taylor, YMCA Senior Fitness Manager. “If you are looking to learn about your health, meet new people and obtain a baseline for measuring your health and fitness goals, we urge you to take advantage of this free offering.”

There is no set age for attendees, but the assessments are meant for older adults.

Registration is required, which you can do by calling 250-491-9622 ext. 211, and space for this Friday’s assessment is limited.

Chris Ogilvie attended a past health assessment at the YMCA and claims it made a significant difference in her overall mobility and energy levels.

Since receiving a free assessment, Ogilvie has made exercise a bigger part of her regular routine and has noticed the difference.

“I was surprised at how much exercising really helps,” stated Ogilvie. “Because of my arthritis, I would sometimes look at the stairs in my building and think, ‘I’m not going up that today’, but now I don’t have any problem going up and down the stairs.”

Ogilvie says she looks forward to monitoring her progress through future health assessments at the YMCA.
