Hockey Night In Canada’s Play On! event is coming back to Kelowna this summer.
This will be the outdoor street hockey tournament and festival’s eighth year in Kelowna.
More than 200 teams and 1,000 players from around the province flock to Kelowna for this annual event during the first week of May.
“It’s such an important event for the city and the region, especially for the youth in our community,” says Mayor Colin Basran. “The summer wouldn’t be the same without it.”
Basran will likely suit up in the celebrity game, which is tentatively scheduled for May 6th at noon.
The two-day competition will happen over the weekend of May 6th and 7th and is open to individuals of any age or skill level.
Teams are self-selected and consist of anywhere from four to nine players.
There are numerous divisions and categories to split up teams based on skill level, including a group of teams built up of beginner hockey players.
Winning teams for each division will receive championship t-shirts, medallions and various other prizes.
There will also be a chance for the winners of certain divisions to attend a CBC televised national street hockey championship that is tentatively planned for next September.
Registration is now open at www.playon.ca, where you can find more information on this year’s tournament as well.
