55 new campsites opening in the Okanagan

Even more visitors will have the chance to camp in the Okanagan this summer with the construction of 55 new campsites.

The sites will be available for the 2017 camping season at:

  • Okanagan Lake South Provincial Park near Summerland (eight sites)
  • Badger Lake Rec Site near Heffley (30 sites)
  • Scuitto Rec Site near Kamloops (17 sites)

"It only takes one visit to the Okanagan to understand why it has the highest demand for campsites in B.C.,” said Premier Christy Clark. “These new campsites will help more people have a unique experience in one of the most beautiful places in the world - and that's an investment worth making."

The provincial government is planning to add 1,900 new campsites in the next five years in the Kootenays, Okanagan, the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

This year, outside of the Okanagan, there will be new at Blanket Creek Provincial Park near Revelstoke, Halfway Hot Springs Rec Site near Nakusp, Six Mile Bay Rec Site near Mackenzie, Garibaldi Provincial Park near Squamish, Chek Canyon Rec Site near Squamish, Stave West -Sayres Lake Rec Site near Mission, Desolation Sound Provincial Park near Powell River, Rathtrevor Provincial Park near Parksville, Goldstream Provincial Park near Victoria, Pye Mountain Rec Site near Sayward and Maple Grove Rec Site near Lake Cowichan.

The new campsites are a mix of BC Parks and Recreation Sites that will support both rustic and less rustic camping.

With the campsites will also come with new roads, water and sewer expansion, electrical upgrades, outhouse facilities and shower and toilet buildings where needed.

The recreation site expansion will include picnic tables, fire rings, signage and outhouse facilities.

Recreation sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

In total, B.C.'s provincial parks receive more than 21 million visits each year.
