UPDATE May 6, 12:30 p.m. - Everything you need to know about flooding in the Central Okanagan

Flooding has forced the closure of two more roads in Kelowna. Sutherland Avenue, from Pandosy Avenue to Richter Street, and Buckland Avenue, from Marshall Street to Ellis Street, are now closed.

Marshall Street in Kelowna is also closed due to flooding.

A local state of emergency has been declared for the City of West Kelowna to address the flooding. No new evacuation orders or alerts have been declared at this time.

Emergency personnel have been conducting tactical evacuations of people throughout Kelowna whose safety is at risk due to flooding. These people have been referred to Emergency Support Services.

In the interest of safety, the public is asked to respect emergency signage and blockades.

Emergency crews and municipal staff from throughout the Central Okanagan continue to attend several areas impacted by flood waters.

A local state of emergency has been declared for the City of West Kelowna to address the flooding. No new evacuation orders or alerts have been declared at this time.

Emergency personnel have been conducting tactical evacuations of people throughout Kelowna whose safety is at risk due to flooding. These people have been referred to Emergency Support Services.

An Evacuation Alert remains in place affecting approximately 90 properties in the Fintry Delta area, just south of Fintry Provincial Park. Properties that are affected by the Alert include those in the delta accessed by Fintry Delta Road, Morden Road and Shorts Road.

Residents in this area should be prepared to leave their homes on short notice should conditions along Shorts Creek worsen. They may also wish to take steps to protect their properties from potential flooding.

The Evacuation Order issued yesterday for Fintry Provincial Park remains in effect.

An Evacuation Order also remains in effect for two properties on Lakeshore Road in Kelowna – 6214 and 6490 due to a landslide. The landslide has crossed the road blocking access and egress to six properties at the very south end of Lakeshore Road – 6550, 6620, 6850, 6950, 7050, 7990, 8000 and 8888 Lakeshore Road.

The Emergency Support Services reception centre is open at 10:30 a.m. at the Salvation Army at 1480 Sutherland Avenue, corner of Burtch Road and Sutherland Avenue, to provide information to residents impacted by flooding. Citizens who are on Evacuation Order are asked to register.

In West Kelowna, Gellatly Road from Witt Road to the Canyon Springs subdivision remains closed at this time. Shannon Lake Road has been reopened for single alternating traffic from just north of Shannon View Drive to the intersection with Bartley Road.

In Lake Country, Beaver Lake Road is closed.

Sandbag supplies have been replenished for all affected communities and residents can find locations indicated at https://www.cordemergency.ca/map.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised that several roads, walkways and parks throughout the Central Okanagan have standing water or are threatened by flooding and to be extremely cautious near watercourses. Watch for closure signage.

Power will be out for several hours this morning to approximately 475 customers in the lower Gellatly area as BC Hydro replaces a power pole impacted by flooding of Smith Creek along Gellatly Road. Visit www.bchydro.com for updates on the power outage and location map.

(UPDATE: 6:15 p.m.) - Central Okanagan Emergency Operations has issued an Evacuation Order for two properties on Lakeshore Road – 6214 and 6490 due to a landslide.

The landslide has crossed the road blocking access and egress to six properties at the very south end of Lakeshore Road – 6550, 6620, 6850, 6950, 7050, 7990, 8000 and 8888 Lakeshore Road. 2002 Ethel Street is also on Evacution Order.

A planned emergency power outage to repair a power pole along Gellatly Road has been delayed until tomorrow morning to ensure safe conditions for BC Hydro workers. BC Hydro plans to replace the pole that was compromised due to flooding of nearby Smith Creek beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 6. BC Hydro anticipates 437 customers along Gellatly Road will be without power for four to six hours.

An Emergency Support Services reception centre has been set up at the Salvation Army at 1480 Sutherland Avenue, corner of Burtch Road and Sutherland Avenue, to provide information to residents impacted by flooding. Citizens who are on Evacuation Order are asked to register.

A number of roads in the Central Okanagan have been affected by flooding. In the District of Lake Country, a portion of Beaver Lake Road is closed. In the City of Kelowna Bulman Road remains closed from Shadow Ridge golf course to Heron Road. In the City of West Kelowna, Gellatly Road is closed from the Canyon Ridge subdivision to the intersection with Witt Road due to flooding of Powers and Smith Creeks. And Westside Road has single lane alternating traffic near the North Westside Firehall at Short’s Creek as debris is being cleared from the creek.

Creeks and streams are continuing to rise and see increased flows, residents are advised to use extra care and attention around local creeks. Hikers and walkers should be aware that fast moving water may cause some creek bank erosion and creek bank edges may not be stable. Anyone wishing to canoe or raft should check their route from land before setting out to ensure debris is not caught near culverts or under bridges.

Boaters are encouraged to keep their boat speed down to prevent shoreline erosion and to watch for any floating debris that may be deposited in area lakes from fast flowing tributaries.

Crews will continue to monitor trouble spots clearing culverts, beaver dams and other blockages that could lead to flooding. Anyone noticing a potential problem or a flooding concern is asked to call the Kelowna Fire Department at 250-469-8801.

Environment Canada has ended the Severe Thunderstorm watch for the Okanagan Valley.

(UPDATE: 5:05 p.m.) - An Emergency Support Services reception centre has been set up at the Salvation Army at 1480 Sutherland Avenue, corner of Burtch Road and Sutherland Avenue, to provide information to residents impacted by flooding.

Sand bags are no longer available at local fire halls for the public and the Emergency Operations Centre will advise when supplies are restocked.

(UPDATE: 4:05 p.m.) - An Evacuation Alert has been put in place affecting approximately 90 properties in the Fintry Delta area, just south of Fintry Provincial Park.

Properties that are affected by the Alert include those in the delta accessed by Fintry Delta Road, Morden Road and Shorts Road.

Residents in this area should be prepared to leave their homes on short notice should conditions along Short’s Creek worsen. They may also wish to take steps to protect their properties from potential flooding.

The Evacuation Order issued earlier today for Fintry Provincial Park remains in effect.

(UPDATE: 1:45 p.m.) - Crews continue to deal with localized flooding around the Central Okanagan.

The City of Kelowna is now delivering sand to the corner of Richter Street and Rowcliffe Avenue and to the Cook Street boat launch for residents who need to fill sand bags to protect their property from flooding.

Sand and bags are also available for West Kelowna residents at Falcon Park on Green Bay Road, Casa Loma Beach Park on Casa Loma Road and Pebble Beach Park at the end of Whitworth Road.

The biggest flooding is at Bulman Road, which is closed from Shadow Ridge golf course to Heron Road.

(Original story: 11:30 a.m.) - Emergency officials and local government staff have been busy responding to multiple reports of flooding and high water levels through the Central Okanagan on Friday.

Heavy rain from Thursday night’s thunderstorms and snowmelt caused by warmer temperatures have combined to cause these conditions.

It’s expected the situation will continue at least through Friday.

The Emergency Operation Centre has been activated to support crews in the field who are responding to these incidents.

Here’s a summary of problem areas around the Central Okanagan.

An evacuation order has been issued for Fintry Provincial Park, which mostly affects campgrounds, as well as one residence.

Motorists should also be prepared for single lane alternating traffic on Westside Road just south of Short’s Creek as crews clear debris from the creek.

The BC River Forecast Centre has also issued a flood watch for Mission Creek, which means water levels could breach the creek’s banks at any time.

Property owners are reminded that they’re responsible for having the tools and equipment necessary to protect their properties from possible flooding.

Sandbags are available at local firehalls in the Central Okanagan for residents who may have flooding concerns.

Multiple areas in West Kelowna have been dealing with flooding on Friday morning, including Gellatly Road and Hitchner Road.

Power will also be out for 6,000 customers in West Kelowna as BC Hydro relocates a power pole that was compromised due to flooding.

The outage is expected to last for approximately 12 hours.

Creeks and streams are continuing to rise in various parts of the Central Okanagan, which means hikers and walkers are advised to use extra care around local creeks.


The Regional District of Central Okanagan has closed two overpasses along the Mission Creek Greenway, as well as a large part of the Glen Canyon Trail.

Boaters are also encouraged to keep their speed down and watch for any floating debris that may have been deposited on the lake after the storm.
