An RCMP officer may have saved the life of a pedestrian who got struck by a motorcycle on Highway 97 in West Kelowna over the weekend.
On May 21st at 1:30 p.m. emergency crews rushed to the scene of a pedestrian on High 97 South near the intersection of Butt Road.
Police determined that the pedestrian was crossing the multi-lane highway about 100 metres away from the controlled intersection, when he was struck by a northbound Harley Davidson motorcycle.
The 68-year-old pedestrian was visiting from Germany. He suffered severe blood loss from serious bodily injuries and from a large bleed. He was given first aid from bystanders until emergency crews arrived.
“One of our officers applied a tourniquet to the man’s severe leg wound,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “It is believed that the officer’s prompt assessment of the situation and decisive actions taken may have saved the man’s life and likely contributed to the victim’s ongoing medical recovery.”
The 29-year-old motorcyclist from Kelowna was treated for minor injuries by paramedics at the scene.
RCMP are continuing to work with the German Consulate in Toronto and the German National Police to locate the man's next of kin in Germany.
