6-storey Pandosy Village development scheduled for public hearing Tuesday night

City Hall will host a public hearing for a large rental housing project beginning at 6 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

In June, city council agreed to send the 48-unit, six-storey project proposed for West Avenue in the Pandosy Village to a public hearing after the development received a recommendation of support from city staff.

The building will include 25 one-bedroom units, 21 two-bedroom units and two three-bedroom units all designated as permanent rentals.

Some residents in the Pandosy Village have expressed concern over the proposed building’s height of six-storeys, as the area’s current zoning only permits four-storeys.

However, the development sits just a block north to the six-storey Groves Avenue project approved by city council in May despite heavy opposition from residents due to its height and density.

When interviewed by KelownaNow in June, councillor Loyal Wooldridge said the project “remains respectful” to the neighbourhood despite the added height and mixed-use commercial element.

“It’s a proposed rental building with high-quality aesthetics, amenity spaces and I’m pleased to see a reasonable commercial aspect,” explained councillor Wooldridge.

“Some residents are concerned about losing that charm of the ‘village by the lake,’ but this project is not a huge skyscraper and that’s not what we want for South Pandosy either.”

The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
