Officials at Kelowna City Hall say the applications for expanded patios on Bernard Avenue are proving popular.
Starting July 1, only pedestrians will be permitted along the busy avenue in an effort to promote businesses following the pandemic's lockdown restrictions.
Resturants, bars and coffee shops will be allowed to create or expand patios onto the sidewalk and roadway making room for more people while still honouring physical distancing recommendations.
As of Thursday, a total of 16 applications for new patios or patio expansions have been submitted.
Establishments on the south side of Bernard Avenue will be allowed to expand patios 7.5 metres onto the roadway, while businesses on the northside will have 2.6 metres of expanded patio space.
Pedestrians will have three-meter wide corridors to travel east and west on Bernard Avenue.
Businesses serving liquor will be required to fence off their service areas, with city staff providing direction on fencing designs to maintain aesthetic standards.
While Bernard Avenue officially closes on July 1, businesses will still be able to submit an application long before it reopens to vehicle traffic in September.
