BCWS to burn 200 piles of wood debris in Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park this fall

Planned burns will be happening in Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park throughout the fall.

The BC Wildfire Service says there are around 200 piles of wood debris to burn and work to do so will begin as early as Oct. 14.

The work will take place along June Springs Road, around 10 kilometres south of Kelowna, and is expected to finish up in December.

BCWS crews will perform the burns in conjunction with BC Parks and the Okanagan Shuswap Resource District.

Staff will carefully prepare, control and monitor the fires as they take place, noted a BCWS release.

Central Okanagan residents can expect to see some smoke, or even flames at times, from these planned burns.

“The exact timing of the burns will depend on site, weather, venting and snow conditions,” the BCWS added. “Burning will proceed only if conditions are favourable.”

It’s part of an ongoing fuels management project supporting the City of Kelowna’s Community Wildfire Resiliency Program, which originally started in 2020.
