Blind Fishing Derby returns for 19th year in Kelowna this weekend

A unique event is back for an 19th year at the Kelowna Yacht Club this weekend.

The annual Blind Fishing Derby is set for Saturday, an event focused on bringing the local blind community together with the boating community to experience Okanagan Lake in a variety of ways.

Yacht club members participate by taking guests out on the water for a cruise, either with fishing or without, or offering their fishing gear out for the day to guests who don’t have equipment.

Since 2004, there’s been a trophy, with braille of course, that is updated each year with the winner’s plaque.

It’s engraved “In Memory of past Commodore Dudley Pritchard, who was an ardent supporter of the event.

Along with the trophy and many other prizes, guests are treated to a delicious closing lunch provided by the Kelowna Yacht Club’s excellent culinary team.

“The Derby each year allows me to be re-acquainted with the lake and meet some extraordinary boat owners who give so much to make this day happen”, says participant Bill Mah.

“The hospitality that is offered up is first class and I’d like to thank the skippers and volunteers who put their busy schedules aside to make us a part of their day.”

Things get underway at 9:30 a.m. as the boats head out onto the lake, either for some fishing or some no-so-serious narrated tours.

If you wish to volunteer your time to be a part of this event, contact Rodney or Gloria Lozinski at 250-863-8861.
