Canadian Tire moving into Kelowna’s old Costco building

Canadian Tire could soon be on the move in Kelowna.

The company has submitted an application to the City of Kelowna to move 600 metres northeast into the building previously occupied by Costco at the corner of Hwy 97 and Hwy 33.

Plans indicate that Canadian Tire would expand the current building from 135,000 square feet to around 209,000 square feet of “building functional area.”

That includes 107,000 square feet of retail ground space, 75,000 square feet of warehouse space, a 14,000 square foot service centre and a 25,000 square foot garden centre.

According to BC Assessment, the current Canadian Tire store at 1655 Leckie Rd. is 83,000 square feet.

There would be nearly 400 parking stalls on the lot, along with a designated area for both short-term and long-term bicycle parking.

The application, which only features visual plans, does not specify anything about the future of the current Canadian Tire gas bar.

There is a Chevron gas station on Hwy 97 near the entrance to the property, but the application does not include any plans for that building.

Local developer Victor Projects Ltd. purchased the site of the former Costco on April 13, 2022, for a price of $31.2 million.

The purchase came two months after Costco left the site for its new, larger store on Baron Road.
