Stuart Park ice rink now open for the winter

(UPDATE: Dec. 3 @ 12:35 pm) - After a 48 hour delay due to unseasonably warm temperatures this week, the outdoor skating rink at Stuart Park is open for the winter.

The rink will be open daily from 6 am until 11 pm for three months before it shuts down in late February.

Anyone who doesn’t have skates will be able to rent them on site from 11 am until 2 pm and 5 pm until 8 pm daily, with the exception of Christmas Day.

Residents can check a still-image live cam to see ice and crowd conditions before heading down to Stuart Park.

(UPDATE: Nov. 29 @ 5:20 pm) – Due to the unseasonably warm weather that has hit Kelowna, the opening of the Stuart Park rink for outdoor skating has been postponed.

Free skating was set to make a return on Wednesday, however, City staff have decided to open the rink on Friday, Dec. 3 at 10 am.

A live camera feed has been set up at the rink so residents can check ice and crowd conditions or see if the rink is closed.

Overnight temperatures are expected to drop below zero Thursday night with the chilly weather sticking around.

(Original Story: Nov. 25 @ 11:25 am) – With December right around the corner, it’s starting to feel more and more like the holidays.

One of Kelowna’s most popular winter traditions will certainly amplify that feeling, as the outdoor rink at Stuart Park will open up for free skating next week.

While there isn’t snow on the ground yet, the rink is still set to open on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 9 am.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming the community to enjoy outdoor skating at the Stuart Park rink this season,” says Steve Fagan from the City of Kelowna.

“Skating at Stuart Park is one of the highlights of winter in Kelowna and we’re excited to return to a casual-use, drop-in model, but do encourage all attendees to be safe and considerate of others.”

The rink will be open daily from 6 am until 11 pm for three months before it shuts down in late February.

Residents will also be able to check a still-image live cam to see ice and crowd conditions before heading down to Stuart Park.

“We encourage anyone coming down to the rink to check the live cam in advance to help avoid crowding,” Fagan added.

“It’s important that the community works together and is considerate of one another as crowding can lead to further restrictions or closures in a pandemic environment.”

If it’s too busy to enjoy a skate at Stuart Park, residents are reminded that there are also indoor public skating times available at Capital News Centre, Memorial Arena and Rutland Arena.
