Future of Lake Ave dog beach to be determined by council

City council will determine the future of the Lake Avenue dog beach at Monday’s council meeting.

A two-year “Dog Beach Trial” was conducted at the beach between August 2017 and September 2019, during which water quality, community feedback and service requests were all considered.

According to the report from council, water quality was tested over the summers of 2018 and 2019 with the results being well within the guidelines for recreational water quality.

The corporal in charge of community policing of the area reported that since the dog park was introduced the park has not been a problem and felt there were fewer calls for service.

Suggestions for improving the beach from the community included better fencing, improved signage, and the addition of a doggie bag dispenser.

The report states that the existing budget is available to improve fencing, creating greater separation between the dog beach area and the path of cyclists and pedestrians

Council will make its decision during its weekly meeting on Monday at 1:30 pm in City Hall.
