An annual Kelowna Yacht Club (KYC) event meant to offer up a day of excitement and inclusion for the visually impaired was held recently.
The 24th annual Blind Fishing Derby took place on Sept. 21, with 30 participants joining in on the fun for a memorable day on Okanagan Lake.
Organized by the Power Fleet Committee and KYC volunteers, it ended up being the perfect day weather-wise for participants to cruise the lake and take part in a bit of fishing.
Bill Mah, who has been a part of organizing the event for the past two decades, called it a “great day out on the water.”
“Joyce Roydell claimed victory with the only catch, and Ryan Jopling had us all laughing when he reeled in someone else’s fishing rod,” Mah exclaimed. “Though it didn’t count for the weigh-in, it added to the fun of the day.”
The Blind Fishing Derby has become a cherished event that brings the community together year after year, and KYC executive director Thom Killingsworth expressed his deep appreciation for everyone who helped make it happen.
“A huge thank you to our volunteers for their dedication and hard work,” he said. “It’s their efforts that make this event a beloved tradition within our community.”
Anyone who wants to get involved in the Blind Fishing Derby next year or beyond is urged to contact the KYC through its website.
