A new micro suite housing project is destined for a future public hearing.
On Monday, Kelowna city council gave first reading to the rezoning application for the five-storey “KLO Gardens” development on the corner of KLO Road and Richter Street.
The project consists of 99 micro-suites with studio-sized units designed to attract the student population from Okanagan College.
City staff are supportive of the proposed variances to the Official Community Plan (OCP), the first of which requests using 74.3% of the site’s land, up from the 50% site coverage permitted in the OCP.
The second variance requests a five-storey building, up from the permitted four and a half storeys in the South Pandosy neighbourhood.
According to the staff report, only 62 parking stalls will be provided for the building’s 99-units, however, its close proximity to amenities, schools and public transit allow for residents to be sufficient without a vehicle.
Developers did hold a public information session on June 19 that was attended by three people.
The project’s public hearing date has yet to be specified but will land on a Tuesday evening in August.
