An Indigenous fashion designer has been invited to attend a fashion show in England as a featured designer, and she’s hosting several bingo nights in Kelowna to help fund her trip.
For the next three Fridays, Jill Setah will be hosting bingo and dinner at the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society from 5-8 pm before taking off for the ‘Night at the Museum’ fashion event at Oxford University, which takes place on Feb. 24.
While there is no entry free for bingo, there will be $10 dinners available, including chili, bannock and pop on Feb. 3, Indian tacos and pop on Feb. 10 and a salmon dinner and drink on Feb. 17.
“My journey to reconnect to my culture began as a young teen girl when my childhood best friend introduced me to the pow-wow trial and lent me one of her jingle dresses to dance for the weekend,” Setah explains on GoFundMe.
“It seems not long ago that it was illegal to practice traditional pow-wows,” she adds. “This is what leads me to want to share my culture with other nationalities.”
Setah told KelownaNow that she is most looking forward to being able to share her Indigenous culture with the UK.
"The fact that I was chosen is fantastic," she says.
Her fundraising goal is $5,000.
